WA Week

WA week
Every year our school likes to celebrate WA Day with a whole school activity.
To celebrate our magnificent state this year, children are asked to bring a copy of a photograph taken somewhere they may have visited in Western Australia. This needs to be a copy of the photograph as IT WILL NOT BE RETURNED.
The children need to be prepared to give a 2 min talk on where the photograph was taken, where this place is located on a map of Western Australia and something special about that place.
Photos will then be glued onto a giant WA DAY which will be on display for the week.

Super Scientists

WOW look at these dioramas!
The children (Biologists) were given a choice of 3 habitats to do a science investigation on.
The Australian Desert, The Great Barrier Reef and The Snowy Mountains.
They had to research 2 animals and 2 plants from their chosen habitat along with any non living things. Then they had to research what might have a damaging effect on that habitat. Climate change or human impact. They wrote some amazing reports to go along with their dioramas. I have displayed these on the wall at the back of the classroom. Come in and have a peek.
Great work Super Scientists!

Super Scientist Presentations Timetable

Term 2

Hello to everyone again! We are well into Term 2 now. Here’s a snapshot of what to expect.

We have spent the first few weeks of the term revising concepts to prepare for NAPLAN. I am very proud of the way your children conducted themselves during the NAPLAN testing time. Each one gave their very best effort with a positive attitude. I couldn’t have asked for more.

As we move into the remaining weeks of the term we can expect to cover topics such as;

English
·         Visual Literacy - picture books, advertisements and short films
·         Reading Strategies such as predicting, self-questioning, creating images, connecting, summarising and main idea
·         Grammar - verbs (action, saying, thinking), clauses in complex sentences and collective nouns
·         Punctuation - quotation marks, ellipses, brackets, colons and hyphens
·         Spelling - suffixes ern and ful, phonemes augh, i, eigh, ou, ary, ough, ent, al
along with some spelling rules
·         Speaking & Listening - super scientist, WA Day

Maths
·         measurement - length, mass, capacity
·         symmetry
·         number
·         chance

Science
We will be studying biological science, discovering the characteristics of plants and animals and how they are classified. This will lead into an exploration of a habitat. Children will identify the living, once living and non-living things in that habitat. They will then conduct an investigation into how climate change will affect that habitat.

HASS
We will be looking at how things have changed from the past to the present. Toys, communication, transport etc.

Just a reminder that Super Scientist is just around the corner. You would have received a note about this. I will post the timetable up next to the classroom door for students to see what day they are scheduled to present their experiment.

So much fun to be had in Room 19!!

Happy Holidays!

It’s been a very busy term.
We’ve enjoyed celebrations such as Australia Day and Harmony Day. And we have our ANZAC ceremony to commemorate in the last week of the Term. This has fit perfectly into our HASS theme where we have been looking at the difference between celebrations and commemorations in countries from around the world. We have specifically studied some Australian celebrations and commemorations.  The children have been working on an inquiry project to present details of a festival from around the world.
Our class has been working very hard to prepare for the NAPLAN testing in May. We have concisely covered the content in Literacy and Numeracy outlined in my initial post for the year. As I have completed assessments over the term, I have noticed considerable improvement in achievement. You should be so very proud of your children. They have maintained a focused approach to their learning and are enjoying the results. I couldn’t ask for more from them. I’m tremendously pleased with their efforts.
We will continue to revise areas that could use a little further consolidation over the coming weeks. We are also learning test taking skills, such as timing ourselves throughout an assessment and how to answer multi-choice questions. Further information regarding NAPLAN testing can be found below.
Thank you for your support with talk homework. This has been a new initiative for our class this year and has had a great impact on your children’s writing. I have noticed an improvement in depth of information included in stories. We have been practising narratives for the second half of this term. All children have a goal that they are working towards. These goals are individual, set according to an area of weakness in their writing. Children must achieve mastery of their goal five times before moving onto a new goal.
Finally, I would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday break. If your children get bored get them to read and do a quiz or maybe write a narrative story. Remember there are always books the children can read online in their Literacy Pro Library. They can do a quiz on any of these books.

NAPLAN
Testing will be held in May.
Students are assessed using common national tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.
NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test. Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each test.
The performance of individual students can be compared to the average performance of all students in Australia.
NAPLAN Planner has been used in Term 4 2017, and Terms 1 2018
Students have many opportunities to get used to test language, content and format.
Sample questions and a sample writing tasks can be accessed on the NAP website:
www.nap.edu.au.
