This term we will be spending time on persuasive text, narrative text and information report writing. We have been studying some dreamtime stories during our NAIDOC celebrations, using our narrative structures to help us identify the elements of these stories. We have summarized 3 dreamtime stories into comic strips.

Our English program will revise homophones, similes, contractions, pronouns, proper nouns, adjectives, adverbs, connectives, past, present and future tense and various punctuation.

The Reading comprehension strategies we will focus on are predicting, questioning, summarizing, connecting and monitoring.

Don’t forget to use the online program Studyladder to consolidate these skills. All children can successfully log onto their Studyladder accounts independently.

We spent the first two weeks of the term looking in depth at some addition and subtraction strategies to help us easily compute simple and complex sums.

We have just begun a unit on money. We have our own little shop set up. The children will have a turn at being the shop keeper and the shopper. They are given an amount of money to spend and they can purchase whatever they want. They have to check their change from the shopkeeper though. You can’t be too careful at the checkout, as we adults all know! Thank you to those parents who allowed their children to raid the cupboards for old packets for our shop. We are insisting on best manners at the checkout. Shopkeepers are encouraged to wish their customers a ‘lovely day!’

 Natasha - "I liked buying chips, milk and orange juice and giving the money to the shopkeeper and getting my change back."

Science

After studying biological sciences last term, we move onto the physical sciences this term.  We have begun a unit on forces - buoyancy, magnetism, gravity and friction. We will be doing some investigations on push and pull forces. Thank you for your support initially. The children found some very interesting objects around the house that use these forces such as magnets in a treadmill and how gravity is demonstrated while using a trampoline. Looking forward to more in depth inquiry of each force as the term continues.

HASS & NAIDOC celebrations

HASS

We begin our term with NAIDOC celebrations. The children have loved making boomerangs and learning some Aboriginal names for animals and places around our school. We have closely studied 3 dreamtime stories. After summarizing each story into a comic strip, the children produced an art piece to compliment the story using techniques such as chalk drawing, blending, silhouettes, finger painting and directed drawing. 

I’m sure you heard all about the day we made damper! We wrote a procedure of how to make damper while we waited for it to cook. Please enjoy these photos of the experience.

We will continue our history study in a unit on ‘Technology Then and Now’. In this unit we will look at how technology has changed in household appliances, transport, communication and games. We have some great activities planned so look forward to the updates for those.
